TEACHING METHODOLOGY
I. How to Teach Reading:
1. Introduce the key words.
2. Do a warm up.
3. Ask students to read the passage silently.
3.1. In case your students have a lot of problems with pronunciation
and intonation read the text to them before their silent reading.
3.2. If silent reading in class takes a lot of your class time, you can
assign this stage as homework.
4. Ask as many comprehension questions as you can.
4.1. Ask at least 2 questions for every single sentence.
4.2. Start with simple Yes/No questions and continue to information
questions (wh-word questions that can be answered directly
from the text (i.e. display questions). Then go ahead to questions whose answers should be inferred (inferential questions).
4.3. Let students answer first chorally, then individually.
5. Read the text to the students and deal with any comprehension
questions they may have.
6. Read the passage again and ask questions related to references
of pronouns, word order, and main clauses of complex
sentences or main ideas of paragraphs.
Note: Don’t overload the students with questions of this type
(at most 5 questions)
7. Give students synonyms and antonyms for several key words with
their own help.
Note: Synonyms and antonyms must be the words that students
already know.
8. Assign reading comprehension homework.
8.1. Ask students to practice reading the passage fluently and free
from pronunciation mistakes.
8.2. Ask students to make questions based on the reading passage (at
least 10 questions).
8.3. Ask students to answer comprehension exercises in the book.
8.4. Ask students to practice synonyms and antonyms of the key words.
8.5. Ask students to write a summary for the passage.
Note: Not all these activities are required to be done for one
single passage ادامه مطلب ...A dialog is taught to expose the students to patterns and expressions used in spoken
English, to practice correct intonation, pronunciation and rhythm.
A. Teaching a language function involves the following steps:
1. Have the students close their books
2. Do a warm up, i.e. ask the students some related questions
to attract their attention.
3. Have the students listen carefully to the dialog read at normal
speed & let them know that they will be asked some
comprehension questions on the dialog.
4. Have them open their books & read the dialog to them.
5. Read the dialog again & paraphrase each sentence.
6. Practice the dialog while their books are closed to the point of
automatic production.
B. Practicing language functions involves the following steps :
1. Have the students repeat the first line after you a few times
chorally with individual spot checks. If the lines are long, you may
have backward-forward repetition. Do the same with the second line.
2. When the students have mastered the first set, do the chain drill,
i.e. , the teacher asks one of the students & she/he answers , then
the same student should ask another one, (This should be
continued by two or three other students). The last student asks
the teacher and the teacher answers. The students repeat her/his
answer chorally. Then, the teacher ask the students and they
answer. All of the students ask the teacher, and the teacher answers.
